FISHING GEAR

Our basic fishing equipment is custom built for Pacific Tuna Ventures by KOLSTRAND COMPANY  in Seattle, Washington. Although every member is welcome to use whatever fishing gear she/he prefers for the larger tuna, especially the deep swimming Bluefin Tuna we use hydraulic-powered downriggers and tuna pullers. To ensure the highest quality for the Japanese markets it is important that the fish are landed quickly without long and stressful fight.

Electric Reels and Kites like these from Kristal will also be used when fishing from the Skiffs

The Pacific Tuna King
carries four 23' Skiffs.

The PTV mother ship carries four 23' fishing skiffs that get hoisted into the water from the deck once near the fishing grounds. Each skiff typically accommodates two members plus the skiffman (crew).

Members use whatever
Fishing Gear they like.

All Members, such as Manfred Schiruska (above), may use any fishing gear (rods, reels, line, and hooks) that they prefer, and may target whatever species they care to. The only requirement is that fish be caught in a manner that allows juveniles and unwanted bycatch to be released alive. Therefore, "longlines" with multiple hooks (typically deployed by commercial fishing vessels) and nets of any kind are never used by PTV.
